Canada Goose - Branta canadensis
A large goose, with a distinctive black head and neck and large white throat patch. An introduced species from N America, it has successfully spread to cover most of the UK. It forms noisy flocks and is often regarded as a nuisance in areas where large numbers occur on amenity grassland and parks.
This is a familiar goose which can be seen all year round in parks and gravel pits recognisable by it’s loud honking call.
This bird will flock together in large numbers causing considerable damage to crops and grassed areas. The movements of large numbers of this bird around lakes and other water can lead to bank erosion and as well as the risks associated with their guano as a potential slip hazard; the risk of infection must also be a consideration.
Pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Campylobacter, Listeria, and Chlamydia have all been linked to Canada Geese.
