Widespread distribution in temperate climates. Generally a pest of warm indoor environments, and in particular, galleys, kitchens and institutional heating systems. Its common name "Steamfly" is said to originate from it's frequent infestation of ships engine rooms.
As with all cockroaches, the female produces an egg case or ootheca which contains a number of eggs. This species produces up to 30 eggs per ootheca, and carries it until hatch. Nocturnal in foraging behaviour, they are omnivorous and will eat any organic matter including human waste products and even wallpaper paste.
This dictyopteran pest is the major cockroach species in Europe and North America. Highly versatile and cosmopolitan, it's small body size and breeding strategies make it a highly successful pest. Large institutions e.g. hospitals, hotels, prisons are particularly at risk.
As with all cockroach control programmes, an integrated approach involving the use of monitoring traps, insecticidal baits and well targeted use of contact insecticides where appropriate is recommended. Night time inspections may be necessary in difficult to control infestation situations in order to identify key harbourage areas. Harbourage denial and proofing are also effective.
